Director's
Message:
"At night the wind goes walking in the field. I did follow
her down potato rows...listening to the voices of the night."
As Fall is potato digging time, here are passages from Nature
Camps' favorite book Opal, The Journal of a Understanding Heart
(http://www.efn.org/~opal/)
Potatoes are very interesting folks.
I think they must see a lot
of what is going on in the earth.
They have so many eyes.
Too, I did have thinks
of all the growing days
there in the ground,
and all the things they did hear.
And after, I did count the eyes
that every potato did have,
and their numbers were in blessings.
I have thinks these potatoes growing here
did have knowings of star songs.
I have kept watch in the field at night
and I have seen the stars
look kindness down upon them.
And I have walked between the rows of potatoes,
and I have watched
the star gleams on their leaves.

There Was an Old Man . . .
Campers and counselors alike dressed up on their afternoon "Half-Day
Hike to Become Grandpas." Given campers' excitement about the
camp song "Old Man from Nature Camps," the hike gave campers
a chance to play on the theme all afternoon long. Campers chose dress-up
pieces from a box of costumes, made up grandparent names for themselves,
and described their grandparent characters. The group then went on
a hike to find other groups and tell them about the "good
ol' days."
