Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Bike Trip

Overview: The C&O Canal Towpath runs 185 miles from Cumberland, MD along the Potomac River Valley into Washington, D.C. The Teen Adventure teens and Counselors will bike ~85 miles over 5 days from Williamsport, MD to Great Falls outside of Washington, D.C. The route gives the group the opportunity to take short side trails to the Antietam National Battlefield, Harpers Ferry, and Great Falls and much more. Along the way there are plenty of places to stop by the river for a swim or sit at a picnic table by the river for lunch, or maybe even a deli just off the trail. Also there are campsites along the path about every 5 miles which allows for a flexible schedule for the group to decide their own pace. Everyone carries all of their own personal gear (clothes, sleeping bag and pad, snacks, etc.) strapped to racks on their bikes. There will also be two pull-behind trailer carts for everyone’s group gear (tents, dinner and breakfast, pots, etc.).

Tentative Schedule

Day 1
Depart from Nature Camps with bikes and get dropped off in Williamsport, MD. Teens start biking with a short day of 5-10 miles with options of staying at Cumberland Valley Hiker/Biker Campsite or Opequon Junction H/B Campsite. (5-10 mi.)
Day 2
Continue to bike downstream until taking a detour to do a bike tour through Antietam National Battlefield. Return to the C&O and camp at Killiansburg Cave H/B Campsite where there is a great cave to explore. (15-20 mi.)
Day 3
Bike 25 miles to Bald Eagle H/B Campsite. Stop for lunch in Harpers Ferry. (25 mi.)
Day 4
Most flexible day to slow down and take breaks along the river after the longest day of biking or keep up the pace. (15-25 mi.)
Day 5
Complete the last 10-20 miles and end at Great Falls for a hike and exploring the falls until getting picked up and taken back to Nature Camp. (10-20 mi.)
