2020 dates coming soon!
For the first time in many years, Nature
Camps is offering the Appalachian Journey
program, a 7-day overnight mountain
experience for teens in a pristine area of West
Virginia. Our location will be 400 acres of
inspiring natural landscape with some of the
darkest night skies in the Eastern U.S., the
highest peak in West Virginia (Spruce Knob),
the healthiest streams in the state, extensive
Red Spruce and northern hardwood forests, natural springs, and numerous caves. From our lodging at the high-elevation Spruce Knob Mountain Center campus of our partner Experience Learning participants will hike, camp, learn survival skills, and conduct meaningful projects. Oral history projects are a unique feature of this trip. We will meet local folks and visit their homesteads and family gathering places with the goal of gaining knowledge and appreciation for their rich Appalachian culture and traditions. Teens will reflect upon the ways their new cultural and historical insights relate to their own lives. Lodging is in dorms and meals are prepared in Spruce Knob Mountain Center's main yurt (see photo). Trip leadership and programming will be co-led by Nature Camps Director Don Webb, an experienced Nature Camps Teen Adventure counselor, and Spruce Knob Mountain Center staff.
